The Turning Year

Being the reckoning of days as the scribes keep it, with the holy days marked for those wise enough to observe them.

Wildreach does not count its days the way the old world did. Here the year is the Turning — twelve months of twenty-eight days each, three hundred thirty-six days from first frost to first frost. Each day of the Turning is one day under the open sky: the sun rises, the sun sets, and the scribes mark the page.

Note

The Turning moves with the world, not the clock on your wall. When the Reach sleeps its nights away, the year quickens; when the world stands still, so does the page. Time out here belongs to the sun, not to the calendar-makers of other lands.

The Twelve Months

The Holy Days

Seven days of the Turning belong to the gods — one feast for each. When a holy day dawns, the whole Reach hears it proclaimed, and for that one day the celebrated god pours twice the favor into every faithful deed their followers perform.

A full Turning passes between one god’s feast and their next — the gods do not cheapen their own days. If your god’s festival is near, plan for it: a day of doubled favor is the fastest honest climb the covenant offers.

Tip

The doubled favor fills the same daily measure the gods always keep — they still grow numb to repetition — so spend a holy day living widely in your god’s domain, not standing in one field. The zeal counts double; the day’s measure does not grow.

Reading the Days

• The calendar always opens on today — the lantern among the panes.
• Days bearing a god’s sigil are festivals; hover to see whose, how far off, and what the day pays.
• The month’s heading names the next festival and counts the days until it, so you need never be surprised by a dawn.
