The Unmended World

Ask the smiths of other lands how steel came to heal itself, and they will not meet your eye. It was never craft. It was a rune of power written into the world’s ledger — and the World-Anvil struck the page.

In Wildreach, Mending does not exist. Not rarely. Not expensively. Not at all.

The scribes agree on how it happened, if not on whether it was right. The self-healing of steel was Oryndel’s kind of miracle — knowledge bent into power, a rune that let a made thing refuse its own ending. And it was Kharoven who would not suffer it. To the first smith, a tool that repairs itself while you swing it is not craft perfected but craft cancelled — a world where nothing is ever truly spent, where the greatest works of the forge are made once and mourned never. So the World-Anvil unwrote the rune, everywhere, for everyone, and did not ask.

The Quiet Rune has not forgiven the erasure of a word. The two gods have rested tense ever since — the oldest quarrel in the pantheon’s sky, and the only one that began over a matter of principle rather than blood or territory.

Here is what Kharoven’s ruling means in practice: what is made wears; what wears is repaired at cost, or lost; and that is precisely what makes a well-kept blade worth something.

  • No librarian will ever teach it. Trade with every villager from here to the horizon — the book does not come up, at any price.
  • No chest holds it. The old vaults, the drowned ships, the cities at the end of the world — their loot carries every treasure but this one.
  • No line hooks it. Fish up all the sodden books you like.
  • No anvil will take it. A Mending book smuggled in from outside this world simply does not bind — the anvil strips the cheat and works the honest remainder.
  • Relics fade in your hands. Gear that somehow carries the old cheat loses it the moment it re-enters the world — when you log in holding it, pick it up, or open the chest it hides in. You’ll be told when it happens. A book that held nothing but the cheat collapses into plain paper.

Everything else about an enchanted item survives untouched — a Sharpness and Unbreaking blade keeps its edge and its endurance. Only the self-healing is unwritten.

The honest tools still work, and they matter more here than anywhere:

  • Unbreaking stretches every point of durability — it is now the enchantment worth hunting.
  • The anvil repairs, at the old price of materials and experience. Expensive is not the same as impossible.
  • The grindstone strips and refunds when a tool’s story is over.
